Captain Flint's Treasure

One map. One traitor. Every soul at this table wants a bigger share.

The lagoon glows amber under a hundred torches, and somewhere past the reef the *Wicked Fortune* rides at anchor, her sails furled for what her captain has sworn will be the last time. Tables of driftwood and old ship's planking groan under roast pig and rum, and every pirate who has ever sailed under Captain Flint's black flag has been summoned to this beach for one final feast. He is thirty years and a hundred legends deep into a life of plunder, and tonight, at last, he means to retire — not quietly, but the only way a man like Flint knows how: by unrolling the map to the greatest treasure ever buried, and splitting it evenly among every soul who ever bled for him.

But a crew built on shared danger was never quite the same as a crew built on shared trust, and thirty years leaves plenty of time for both kinds of debt to pile up. Somebody at this table owes money they can't repay by sunrise. Somebody has been quietly adding up numbers that don't balance in the crew's favor. Somebody still answers, in their heart, to a captain other than Flint, and somebody else has decided that thirty years of loyalty deserves more than an equal share with pirates who've barely earned their sea legs. Old rivalries dress themselves up as jokes around this fire; old debts smile and pour the rum. Nobody here is exactly who the rest of the table thinks they are, and by the time the fireworks start, at least one of them has stopped waiting for Flint to hand out anything at all.

When Flint finally excuses himself to fetch the map from the sea chest in his cabin — a squat log cabin built just back from the tree line, a short walk up from the fires, his one concession to sleeping on solid ground between voyages — he means to be gone five minutes. He comes back empty-handed, furious, and holding a blank scrap of parchment tied off with the map's own cord — a decoy, left behind so the theft wouldn't be noticed until it was too late to matter. Somewhere on this beach, among the people he trusted enough to call crew, sits the traitor who broke the pirate code for a bigger cut of a fortune that was already going to make every last one of them rich. The map hasn't left the island. Neither has the thief. All that's left before the tide comes in is figuring out which smiling face at this fire deserves to walk the plank.
